Parkland Select Soccer has always been a proponent of developing players to achieve results at any level that they compete in. The program is a dynamic one and encourages fair play, intensity and good sportsmanship. Unlike other similar programs, we consider competitive programs should not lose sight of this. Many of our players have a good beginning athletically, and sound technique at the Junior Level (ages 12-16). The club does not offer training below the Junior Level only because of the dynamics currently in the South Florida area.
At the Junior level the environment is always one of fun, but challenging . There is the emphasis on mastering the ball and using the game as the best teacher. Many small sided games and one vs one exercises are conducted. It is noticed that players at this age level learn faster when there is an element of problem solving on the pitch in their games even though not to any great extent, and as the age level increases the problem solving becomes a little more emphasized.
At the senior level , over 16 years old, players are fairly advanced athletically and technically. We emphasize tactical work and advanced problem solving on the pitch. Locally the teams play against other travelling division teams over an extended period of time , and we mix tournament and Cup play in the season which lasts August through June , with intermittent holiday breaks .
TRAINING TENET Typically the "Select" program at the senior level is geared towards problem solving. Special attention is paid to positions that have been shown to be weak. Apart from skills training, we use formations that encourage development of those weak positions, but remain flexible and practice a variety of different formations. We support the view that players determine the system and not the other way around.
We set objectives for players and coaches and make those objectives realistic based on our talent pool.
Our practice schedules typically emphasize speed training and technique as the hallmark of performance. Because the program likes attractive attacking soccer, there is also an emphasis on dribbling at speed , coerver moves and little restriction on individualism . Once the players understand the concept of space , there is no need to “over-coach” or micro-manage a situation.
TYPICAL PRACTICE Warm-ups with the ball (eg.coerver moves) and a game (unlimited or limited touches). Technique activities:
Field players:ball handling / dribbling / passing / receiving / shooting, Using both feet.
Goal keepers: separate warm ups (catching/kicking/passing/punting Tactics- Field players ( getting open/showing for passes/support/overlapping / Place changing) Goal keepers (positional play/post protection/coming off the line)
Small-sided games: (Always finish with a game. Always finish game on a positive note, eg. When a goal is scored or a brilliant save made ).
